Don’t buy skates! Don’t worry about buying new skates as we have skates you can hire at £1 per hour. We advise not rushing into buying skates until you are sure skating is the sport for you / your child.  If you do want to buy skates, please read our Guide to buying skates and talk to our coaches who can advise you.  If you already have skates, you are welcome to use them however please ensure they are safe and the wheels are clean.

Basic Skills 3 Class

Do buy protective gear!  It is important that you understand that Roller Skating can be a dangerous sport and injuries, while uncommon do happen.  We particularly recommend wrist guards and soft knee pads.

Read our Rules of Safe Skating.  These will be covered in more detail at our safety briefing at our taster session.

Wear casual /comfortable clothes.  Choose clothing which will not restrict your movement.  Avoid baggy clothing or scarves as these may get tangled in your skates.

We skate at West-Walsall E-Act Academy.  Click here for a map.

When you arrive,  head for the sports hall and make yourself known to one of our coaches.

Pay for the session as soon as you arrive in the sports hall. The one-hour Taster session costs £5 and includes skate hire if needed.

What to expect at the taster session.
On your first visit, we will sort you out with hire skates if needed.  You will be asked to sign an indemnity form then you will receive a  safety briefing from one of our coaches. After the briefing, you will be asked to sign a form confirming that you have received the briefing.  The rest of the hour session will be spent learning skating skills appropriate for your ability.  Once you have completed the taster session, you are welcome to stay for the next hour and practice what you have learnt.  At the end of the session if you have hired skates, please and put them away in the cupboard. What to expect at our recreational classes.
Our recreational classes are usually for 1 hour.   We begin with a skate around for 10-15 minutes to warm-up.   (usually in an anti-clockwise direction for safety).

For skaters who are absolute beginners, we would ask a non-skater known to the skater (usually a parent/carer) to walk the skater around. Depending on progress, they may need to do this for a few weeks before the skater is ready to join one of our coaching groups.

Generally, over the next 40-45 minutes, skaters will be split into smaller groups based on their grade. For each grade, skaters will learn different skills; For example for grade 1 they will learn how to stand up on skates, balance, skate forwards and stop; with each grade, the difficulty increases.

For the final hour, skaters will generally do a group warm-up session then practice a routine to music or perform dances.  We do not guarantee that skaters will get coaching during this hour.

At the end of the session please take your skates off quickly and leave the hall. if you have hired skates, pleases put them away.
